Reviews

From The Inspiration Shelf (6/15/2024): “Each story has a twist and each twist brings us to an idea. Indeed, it’s this ‘literature of ideas,’ as Sellman describes speculative fiction, that makes this collection shine so brightly.”—Glenda Bailey-Mershon, author of Eve’s Garden [Twisted Road: 2014] and Weaver’s Knot: Poems [Finishing Line Press: 2023], and founder, Jane’s Stories Press Foundation [Clara Johnson Award for Women’s Literature]

From R.G. (7/15/2024): “This anthology has such a diverse collection of creepy stories. Tamara put so much thought into every detail. The name ‘Madam Walks-on-Needles’ will stay with me for a long time. My favorite story in the collection is ‘Since that First Night of Lit Halls,’ a true domestic horror that is filled with poetic lines that don’t overshadow the dread. Well worth the read. Looking forward to Tamara’s next book!”

From ME.T. (7/31/2024): “These Northwest stories blew me away. Fun, clever, scary, incredulous, mysterious, poignant, compassionate, hopeful, conversational, and chock-full of variety. Let’s hear it for picturesque description, as is ‘She was the grand matron of the Oyster Coast, a worn-out dishrag of a woman, older than ninety when she passed, spine bent like a hemlock’s tip, her skin the color and texture of ragged bark’ in Madam’s Curse. Some of Sellman’s stories suggest escape for unfortunate characters or hint at politics / social conditions today. You will enjoy Cul de Sac Stories.

From K.dM. (10/13/2024): “I couldn’t stop reading, each story grabbed me by the collar and pulled me in. I won the book in an author’s raffle online over the summer, but didn’t think to read it until now, as a part of my annual Spooky Reads. In particular, the story about trees was so beautifully written, each word seemed so carefully chosen to propel the story forward. Another story about the healing powers of a certain childhood doll was equally engrossing. … All in all, I read the book in two afternoons. I would have loved it if the book were twice as long. The collection of stories all had a different way of unsettling things, the sense that something was just not quite right, was prevalent. … I will for sure be adding Cul de Sac Stories to my horror/spooky season bookshelf. Definitely a book I would tell you to go for it and buy it. You won’t be disappointed.”
