Talking about making–or not making–money as a writer on Chicago’s RadioGirl podcast

One of my favorite things about launching a book is talking to so many interesting people.

RadioGirl’s Margaret Larkin and I (pictured below) had a great livestream chat recently about the writing life: how to sustain it, mindsets about making money as a writer, the creative process, plus so much more.

In fact, we could talk about so much more even than that… after all, the writing life and process are bottomless topics. And it looks like I’ll be joining her again in the near future for this very purpose. What a treat! She’s a seasoned interviewer and projects that cool Chicago journalista vibe that makes me reminiscent for my days living in the Windy City as a budding journalist. I love it that she’s now working at my alma mater, Columbia College.

I met Margaret a little more than a year ago in the Chicago Writers Circle, which has been a wonderful support system, helpful accountability group, and reliable “write in” team. My Chicago “squad” has served as a significant bright light for me since I joined them in November 2022. I’ll be traveling to Chicago this fall and can’t wait to meet them all in person!

In next month’s Rhymes With Camera Substack, I’ll be writing a bit more about how write-ins and other kinds of writing groups can really buoy up writers who feel like they are sinking. Want to catch that essay? Subscribe to my Substack free; it’s just once a month!
