As a creative person, it is extremely important to me to be true to my voice and vision, to honor the wealth of original human-created literary works, and to strive for the most original work I can create as an individual human being.
I have not knowingly or intentionally used any type of generative* artificial intelligence for the writing of any of my manuscripts in the past, nor do I plan to ever use generative artificial intelligence in future creative writing endeavors.
I have used and will continue to use assistive** artificial intelligence in applications that help me with symptoms and disability that come from multiple chronic, incurable conditions.
There is no shame in using assistive artificial intelligence as it allows me to communicate (read, speak, comprehend) when I have aphasia or visual impairments. Using assistive artificial intelligence allows me to function in spite of the impairments that chronic illness can bring so that I may continue to write, make films, podcast, and participate in other creative endeavors.
*Generative AI in creative writing is a type of machine learning that creates original creative works based on human input and data analysis, much of this having been gathered and stored without the permission of the original authors.
**Assistive AI describes “smart” tools that people can use to improve their performance of ordinary activities, like speaking, reading, walking, etc. These technologies are the lifeblood for many people living with disability and they are not created through the theft of intellectual property.
