I have experience writing the following:
- Curated link lists (“listicles”)
- Q&As
- Interviews
- Features (people, places, current event subjects, topic surveys)
- Interpretive articles and essays
- Blog posts
- News shorts
- Newsletter items
- Calendar items
- Editorials
- Basic data entry for building newsletter subscription lists
- Recipes (and recipe editing)
I am familiar with AP Style, APA (for science writing annotations) and common recipe writing standards. I can work with house style and I can generate unique style sheets as needed. I have worked “on deadline” for 25+ years. I know how to fact-check and how to corroborate sources. In some cases I might be able to produce publication-ready high-resolution digital photographic images to accompany some manuscripts.
I have a degree with honors specializing in Journalism/Magazine Editing and Production from Columbia College Chicago (’90). I specialize in taking difficult subjects (scientific or academic, for instance) and simplifying them for the layperson in a way that is engaging.
See Specialties to learn what subjects interest me the most. I write as a specialist and am not typically interested in general topics, but you can always ask, as my personal interests are rather eclectic.
Want to see previous work? Contact me at tkswriter@gmail.com or call me at 206.618.7348 and I can send you samples or links as necessary.
Please note: I am a professional independent journalist and do not work on spec. I will not accept gratis work as I already write monthly for nonprofit publishers. I will not write for clients who use a payment model based on clicks-per-view.
Rates and terms are negotiable. Payment should cover not only research and writing time, but also expenses for research and travel as needed. I will require an writer/client contract be completed at the time of assignment and can provide a general agreement form in the event the client does not have one available.
